Is my journal really private?

Yes. Your notes are encrypted on your device with AES-256-GCM before they ever leave your browser, and only your passphrase can decrypt them.

Where are my encrypted notes stored?

Encrypted notes live only in your browser's local storage as ciphertext. They are never uploaded to any server or written to any database.

What happens if I forget my passphrase?

Your notes are unrecoverable — that is the point of zero-knowledge encryption. There is no reset path, by design.

Does Aetheris use Vault notes for AI recommendations?

No. Vault notes are never analyzed, never read, and never used for any recommendation. They are sealed from the AI entirely.

How the Encryption Works

The Sovereign Vault uses AES-256-GCM, the same authenticated encryption standard trusted by banks and governments, performed entirely by your browser's native Web Crypto API. Your passphrase is never transmitted or stored.

A cryptographic key is derived from your passphrase using PBKDF2 with a quarter-million iterations. That key exists only in your device's memory for the duration of your session — it never leaves your browser.

This is a true zero-knowledge design: the server only ever sees ciphertext. Even Aetheris cannot read your notes, because we never hold the key.

How It Differs From the Micro-Journal
